LP and HP filters

Hello,

I have a question about using the LP and HP filters in Trackplug.  In the book “Mastering Audio,” Bob Katz talks about the issue of phase distortion that occurs when using steep filters.  He talks of how this can actually be a problem for frequencies above (in the case of HP) or below (for LP) the cutoff frequency.  To avoid this, might it be better use a parametric eq at at a very low or very high frequency and adjust the Q as needed?  If a lowpass or highpass EQ is activated in Trackplug, why can’t the Q be adjusted?

Thanks,
Ben

Hi,

It’s true that steep filters affect phase response in the passband, but you can’t get something for nothing. LP and HP filters with 0 phase response (called linear-phase filters) are easily created but aren’t implemented in TrackPlug. We didn’t think these long convolutional filters belong in a channel strip plug.

The LP and HP filters do not have a Q control at present. The usual reason to use a LP filter with Q is really as a swept effect in a synthesizer (that classic moog sound).

Best regards,
